At the Preston Dental Center, our cosmetic dentists have produced beautiful, radiant smiles for hundreds of patients. Porcelain veneers, a popular and versatile treatment option, are used to correct a host of aesthetic problems. Our esteemed cosmetic dentists, Dr. J. Gregory Mayes and Dr. Lisa H. Mayes, use porcelain veneers to repair minor tooth imperfections and defects, conceal old fillings or other aged dental work, make color enhancements for teeth with permanent stains, and as an alternative to orthodontic treatment. An effective and less invasive alternative to porcelain crowns and dental bonding, porcelain veneers are commonly used to correct teeth that are worn, stained, chipped, crooked, misaligned, or discolored. Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells of ceramic material that, when bonded to the fronts of teeth, improve their aesthetics and durability. Porcelain veneers, available to our Cary, Durham, and Raleigh, North Carolina-area patients, are a relatively noninvasive yet effective approach to correcting teeth that are discolored, chipped, or misshapen. Sometimes referred to as “instant orthodontics,” porcelain veneers can be used to correct gaps or minor misalignments.

Advantages of Porcelain Veneers

Thanks to their mastery of aesthetics, the cosmetic dentists at Preston Dental Center can utilize porcelain veneers to make almost any smile flawless. Our high-quality porcelain veneers produce radiant results and offer an array of advantages over other cosmetic treatments. The benefits of porcelain veneers include:

A Single Treatment Produces an Assortment of Improvements

With so many cosmetic dentistry uses, porcelain veneers are capable of producing dramatic smile makeovers. Porcelain veneers create brighter, healthier, straighter, gap-free, beautiful smiles. Drs. Greg and Lisa Mayes have used porcelain veneers to rejuvenate hundreds of smiles throughout the Greater Cary and Durham-Raleigh, North Carolina area.

Porcelain Veneers are a Less Invasive Alternative to Dental Crowns

Both porcelain veneers and dental crowns are useful for correcting teeth that are discolored, extensively damaged due to decay, or permanently stained, fractured, or brittle. However, porcelain veneers preserve more of the tooth’s natural structure. Dental crowns require more tooth reduction so that the “cap” can fit over the tooth.

Porcelain Veneers are Stain-Resistant

Since porcelain veneers are made of an advanced ceramic, the veneer’s surface will be stain-resistant. Other dental bonding materials may be susceptible to discoloration when placed in contact with staining agents such as tobacco, red wine, coffee, or tea. Preston Dental Center’s porcelain veneers patients, though, have maintained long-lasting, beautiful smiles.

The Porcelain Veneers Procedure

To determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for porcelain veneers, Drs. Greg and Lisa Mayes will carefully examine your teeth. After this consultation is complete, the porcelain veneers procedure itself generally requires two visits to our office in Cary.

During the first office visit, our dentists will carefully prepare your teeth for the porcelain veneers. After administering a local anesthetic, one of our cosmetic dentists will remove a very thin layer of the tooth’s enamel that equals the thickness of the veneer to be placed onto the tooth’s surface. An impression of the tooth will then be taken and sent to a laboratory where your porcelain veneers will be crafted.

At the second office visit (typically one to two weeks later), your porcelain veneers will be permanently cemented to your teeth. First our dentists will temporarily place each veneer and examine its fit and color. The veneer will be trimmed as needed to achieve the proper fit and the color will be adjusted through the use of a cement of the appropriate shade. We will then prepare the tooth by cleaning, polishing, and etching it, a step that allows for strong bonding. Once the veneer is in the proper position, a special light beam will activate the cement, sealing the veneer in place.

With porcelain veneers in place, cosmetic dentistry patients can expect straighter, whiter, and more even teeth. To learn more about the porcelain veneers procedure, contact our office — serving Raleigh, Durham, and North Carolina patients statewide — and arrange a consultation at the Preston Dental Center.

Living with Porcelain Veneers

Following the placement of porcelain veneers, some patients will experience increased sensitivity in the teeth, particularly when they come in contact with hot or cold substances. Generally this sensitivity lessens within the first two weeks. Patients who grind or clench their teeth when they sleep may benefit from a protective mouth guard. Porcelain veneers are extremely durable and able to withstand considerable biting pressure; however, they may fracture if twisted. Porcelain veneers should be cared for much in the same way as natural teeth, with twice daily brushings, flossing, and periodic visits to the dentist. When properly cared for, though, porcelain veneers have produced beautiful results that last for decades.
